Description
The University of Bologna, founded in 1088, is the oldest academic institution of the Western world. With its 95,000 students, 3,300 lecturers and researchers, over 1,000 research and scholarship winners and 1,800 PhD students, 23 faculties and 70 departments, it is one of the most important higher education institutions in Italy and the whole of Europe.
The University’s academic provision is extremely broad. Its 23 Faculties offer 120 first-level degree courses (laurea), 135 second-level degree courses (laurea magistrale), 108 doctoral degree courses and 84 vocational master courses for post-graduate students, also involving activities carried out in contact with the professional world.
From Chemistry to Engineering, from Archaeology to Law, from Medicine to the Humanities, research is at the heart of Bologna University’s strategic choices. Its excellent results in many fields are published and often get patented. University expertise is active at the cutting edge of innovation in every possible field of knowledge, with 90 patents registered and 13 spin-offs and an overall research investment amounting to around 60 million Euros.
According to a recent report published by the national committee for the evaluation of the University system, the University of Bologna is the most internationalised of all the Italian universities. The number of foreign students regularly enrolled is 4,000, while 1,900 exchange students arrive each year within the framework of the international mobility programmes and 800 foreign students attend the 50 courses provided by the International Summer School Programme. More than 1,500 students of Bologna University spend a period of study abroad every year on international exchange programmes.
The University of Bologna fosters academic and scientific relations with foreign partners: 540 Bilateral Agreements within the Erasmus Programme and some 200 Cooperation Agreements with overseas Universities all round the world, dedicated to mobility and joint research projects and activities. The University takes an active part in several EU calls for proposals in the field of higher education, teaching and research.
The library system is very broad-ranging, containing several million volumes and providing access to the best scientific and academic publications from all over the world. Through its computerised library services, end-users can carry out electronic searches in the catalogues of the University of Bologna as well as other national catalogues.
The oldest University in Italy is also one of the most technologically advanced. Each month there are 3,000,000 accesses to the University's Web Portal, making it the most visited University website in Italy.
Since 1989, the University of Bologna has carried out the largest decentralisation programme in the history of the Italian Universities, setting up new University campus branches in four towns of the region, namely Cesena, Forlì, Ravenna and Rimini.
